So i need new skis, my bindings had a screw pull out of the wood core when they broke and despite my best efforts to get them back in they wouldn't stay
In addition to the unpleasant prospect of having to drop coin on skis I had to tell my wife I wanted new skis...which lead to a huge fight that was also very unpleasant. We have very different opinions on the matter of buying things between Halloween and Christmas (she is actually very supportive of my skiing). She finally relented, unhappily, to let me buy skis (hey, I really need that outlet in the winter) but I had to resign myself to the idea that I would either have to:
a. Pony up the dough to the tune of 800+ bucks
b. Compromise on what I wanted to get a last years, demo or closeout (wrong size, style, etc)
c. Ski swap and buy used with mixed results.
Last week, on a whim, I decided to call up a buddy of mine to have lunch since I haven't seen him in a while and i was in his neighborhood. We had a good talk and in the end he mentioned that he got a 50% friends and family code for Black Diamond that he wasn't expecting and didn't need. SCORE! I quite like BD skis and its nice to buy local.
Talking to some of the gear experts at backcountry.com they steered me to a certain BD ski or a 4Frnt ski. Both look great, but its still $400+ for the DB and $800+ for the 4frnt. Then I find out this same week my cousin actually works for 4Frnt. I humbly reaching out to see if there is anything he would be willing to do...he says he can hook me up! Stoked!
from possibly not getting any skis I want to having my choice of the 2 I like for half off at least!
Cool story right?
Enjoy the official ski car of Utah with an appropriate sticker.and a bonus lifted impreza sport

The best skis I ever had were a pair of snowblades. Never had more fun messing around even if they are slow.

I just picked up my new pair of Volkl Mantras this past weekend, and I am UNCONTROLLABLY STOKED (my first new boards in a quite a number of years). Couple that with the first snow of the season up here in Montana on Sunday, and the bitter cold weather, and I just don't know what to do with myself.
Cool story... bro!

Did you try filling with wood filler or epoxy and re-tapping the screw?

tricky tricky, I wonder how the rental shops repair these. Enjoy your new skis! Jealous, here's to hoping Tahoe gets snow this year.

You have to drill out the old hole, and put a peg of wood surrounded with glue or epoxy (tight fit preferably). Good as new, You have to get all the old broken wood bits out. That is key. It sounds like he wants new skis though.

this is too true. They are like the vegans of the ski world

They wouldn't. A ski shop would trash em. Im planning on mounting a different binding with a different hole pattern from an older set of skis that are well past their prime, but have great bindings. These will be my inbounds skis.

That's the other half. These are 6 seasons old and starting to show it, plus they are bigger and heavier than I wanted to start. They will be my resort ski with other bindings.

I sometimes unlock my tour bindings and fuex tele just to piss off my buddy

I knew this girl who insisted on saying "I am going to tele this weekend"
Oh cool, so you are going skiing
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I am going Teeeeeeeeeeeele this weekend"
Ugh. Keep up the good fight hammerhead

oh snow blades. My brother crusades against them when he sees someone on them. He skied on them for 2 seasons and realized that he wasn't keeping up, or getting better.

What? I could ski backwards and up hill with them. They aren't fast but they are fun! No skiing for me this year.

They're a great learning tool, but skiing on them for long will teach you really bad habits. To counter that, also get a pair of rock-hard 2 metre downhill skis, and learn to do the same tricks on them :)

What? When did that happen? Is this some hipster shit?
![]() 11/11/2014 at 16:23 |

no, just a different type of way to turn your skis, and people think they are cool as hell because of it

I know what telemark is. I was asking about when it started being a dick thing to do. Used to be it was just something people took up when they'd spent too long doing ski seasons and run out of other new things to try - usually a step or two down the list from paragliding.
Well, long, long ago, back when my dad was a kid, if you went to an old-fashioned resort, stemming was still seen as suspiciously new-fangled, and telemark was still semi-common.

I am not sure when, but it certainly is a thing. People cant just say I am going skiing. they have to make sure you know how damn cool they are by going telemark skiing. Just annoying more than anything. It doesnt make you a dick, like being a vegan isn't being a dick, or professing you are gluten intolerant to the world when you do not have celiac's disease is actually being a dick, but it is the thought that you are superior because you don't just "ski" that kills it for me. I have alot of "friends" who have that mentality

Oh, right, like people used to do with snowboarding? I know what you mean.
The nice thing about working in the Alps for a while was that every time some dickhead turned up and started mouthing off, there'd be half a dozen people there who genuinely could make him look like small fry, having been doing the same thing better for years.

oh yeah, I learned to ski in the alps, at least partially. I know what you mean!
I used to skateboard and thought I could try snowboarding and be right on it, but I failed every time. I think going down a mountain face on in very ingrained after doing it since I was 3.

That's awesome! I know the feeling, too. A few years back I was playing poker with a guy who worked for Grenade gloves, whose brother was good friends with Danny Kass. Well his brother somehow got a DK pro model GNU snowboard and had given it to the guy I was playing poker with. Turns out he needed some money fast and sold me this $600 board for $200 about 6 months before it was even on sale to the public. That board rips, even after a few hard winters.
